Community Outreach
In addition to reaching out to diverse ethnic and cultural elements of the Peninsula community with multi-cultural programming, the Association has undertaken the following examples of outreach and education programs and initiative:
- Provision during the 2002-2003 subscription series of 750 free or discounted tickets to low-income families, students, and seniors through a variety of school, community, and charitable organizations (supported in part by governmental and foundation grants).
- Presentation each year of a Family Concert in collaboration with the Peninsula Youth Orchestra. The program appeals to younger families and includes a music education component.
- Annually hosting the Young Musicians Competition, including a $500 prize for the first place winner. In the 2002-2003 season, over 25 students participated.
- Presentation each year of a free outdoor summer concert at Oak Creek Apartments featuring the first place winner of the Young Musicianís Competition.
- Annual performance of a concerto featuring the winner of the Irving M. Klein International String Competition for young artists. This concert is always a part of the regular subscription series. The Klein Competition winner also teaches master classes in the local schools.
- Regular collaboration with the Stanford University Symphony Chorus, this past year including the Ragazzi Boys' Chorus in a performance of Carmina Burana.
- Educational in-school programs highlighting the works contained in a specific concert. Free or discounted tickets accompany the material provided to local schools
- Presentation of Music Merit Awards by the Peninsula Symphony Auxiliary. These awards highlight the progress and accomplishments of high school students, and are coordinated through music teachers in the local public schools.
- Since the inception of the Peninsula Symphony, informative program notes have been a integral part of our concerts. These notes are now accompanied by pre-performance lectures.
